Black (Early Career) Scientists in Cambridge

Africans in STEM acknowledges and thanks the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Pharmacology at Cambridge University for their financial support towards the physical posters for this project. This project is inspired by Tse Uweja’s 2019 Black History Month exhibition in the Engineering Departments at Cambridge University and the Black Cantabs Research Project. How we celebrated Black History Month 2020 at Africans in STEM

Following our conversation held in early August about some of the challenges faced by Black students in STEM academia, we embarked on two projects for Black History Month:
  • a   poster and online mini-exhibition of notable Black scientists from around the world. The posters were  displayed in STEM departments across Cambridge University and rotated in different departments for each week of Black history month. The online exhibition launched on Monday 5 October and is still available to access free of charge.

  •  a virtual panel discussion jointly organized with the Department of Pharmacology graduate and postdoc committee at Cambridge University. The event titled, Spotlight on Black Female Scientists in Cambridge,    featured scientists who spoke about their research and how they navigate academia and Cambridge. A recording of the event can be accessed HERE.
